Briefing Session


A briefing session in view of the 2014 Omnicane Award was held at the Bonâme Hall of the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority in Réduit this Wednesday 2 April 2014.

Some 75 F V and F VI students attended this briefing session during which Mr Jacques Dinan, Omnicane Award Coordinator , informed them about the theme of this year's edition which is « How would Mauritius as a Small Island Developing State reconcile its economic development goals and environmental imperatives? »

Mr Dinan gave a detailed explanation of the rules and regulations of the projects to be submitted. He also answered their questions about the submissions of the projects.

The Omnicane Award Coordinator stressed upon the fact that no more than four teams from one college can enter the competition. He added that the Microsoft Powerpoint presentations must be between 20 to 30 slides and the font to be at least 24 points. Mr Dinan also mentioned that each project should genuinely reflect the work of all the five students of the team submitting the project. He also said that a print out of the Microsoft Powerpoint presentation must be submitted and this should be of one slide per page either in black or white or in colour. He mentioned that a work diary has also to be submitted as a recap of the team work on a daily basis which can include the persons whom the team members will have interviewed.

As for prizes, Mr Dinan informed that the winning team will receive the Omnicane Award trophy and each member Rs 20 000 and a souvenir trophy. As for the runner-up team, each member will receive Rs 8 000 and a souvenir trophy. Special prizes might also be attributed upon recommendation of the jury. All the prizes will be offered by Omnicane.

The jury is composed of :

The Omnicane Award Coordinator mentioned that those selected for an oral presentation of their projects will have to do it in front of the members of the jury and that the winning team will have to do an oral presentation on the day of the award ceremony.

Mr Dinan also informed the students present that their projects should be duly endorsed by the rector / principal of their college . He added that the projects should be submitted by hand at Omnicane Anglo-Mauritius House, 7th Floor, Port-Louis. (Tel: 212 3251; fax: 211 7093) on Tuesday 10 June 2014 from 9 to 2 p.m.

Les étudiants des Forms V et VI sont invités à se regrouper par équipes de cinq pour préparer leur étude. Toutefois, un collège ne peut faire participer plus de quatre équipes.

L’équipe victorieuse recevra le trophée Omnicane Award et Rs 100 000 à être partagées entre les cinq membres de l’équipe, alors que ceux de l’équipe remportant le second prix partageront Rs 40 000; sur la recommandation du jury, des prix spéciaux pourraient aussi être décernés aux autres meilleures équipes. Les prix sont offerts par Omnicane Ltd.

Les études soumises comprendront une version imprimée de leur diaporama PowerPoint, conçue en vue de soutenir leur présentation orale de 15 minutes sur le thème du concours ainsi qu’un résumé de leurs observations et de leurs propositions. Ces éléments devront également être soumis sur CD-Rom. Les textes ainsi que les présentations devront être impérativement en anglais.

Les études, dûment endossées par le recteur ou le manager du collège, devront être soumises au Head Office, Omnicane Ltd, Anglo-Mauritius House, 7th Floor, Port-Louis. (Téléphone: 212 3251; télécopie: 211 7093) au plus tard le mardi 10 juin 2014 à 14 heures.

OMNICANE AWARD 2012
An Inter-College Project Competition
Call for Entries/Rules & Regulations


1.The inter-college project competition is organised by Omnicane Ltd in collaboration with the Ministry of Education & Human Resources.

2.The theme of the competition, this year, is: How can the Planters’ Cooperative Movement in Mauritius be re-engineered to meet the Challenges of the new Cane Industry?

3.The competition is open to all registered colleges of the country including Rodrigues but limited to pupils of Forms V and VI (or equivalent).

4.Each project shall be prepared by a team of FIVE students. Teams composed of more than, or less than, FIVE members will not be allowed to participate. Projects should reflect the combined and joint effort of all five members of the respective teams. A college may enter more than one team but shall not enter more than FOUR (4) teams.

5.Each project shall consist of the hard copy of a Microsoft PowerPoint slide show, designed to support a fifteen-minute long oral presentation on the theme of the competition. The PowerPoint slide show shall be printed, one slide per page, on standard A4 paper (297mm x 210mm) - used recto only and properly bound. Projects of any other size will NOT be accepted. No hard materials such as wood or metal should be used for the cover of the projects. The language used should be ENGLISH.

6.Participants shall insert, at the beginning of their project, a summary of their findings and proposals. The summary should be between 750 and 1 000 words in length.

7.A soft copy of the Microsoft PowerPoint slide show as well as the Microsoft Word document containing the summary, on CD-Rom, shall be included in each project.

8.Indications concerning the PowerPoint slide show:
•There shall be a minimum of 20 slides and a maximum of 30 slides, inclusive of the opening slide as well as of those used for photographs, graphics, etc.
•The slides shall be properly numbered.
•The font-size of texts on slides shall be at least 24 points.

9.Each project shall be accompanied by a WORK DIARY. The Work Diary shall describe the work strategy of the team and list all visits and interviews together with an indication of what was gained at therefrom. Dates also shall be mentioned. Information about interviews shall include any help provided by a member of the college staff.

10.On the basis of the projects entered by the participants, the jury will decide which teams should be invited to make an oral presentation of their project on the theme of the competition while using Microsoft PowerPoint facilities.

Each short-listed team will be invited to make an oral presentation of its project in the presence of the jury.

11.The results of the project competition will be announced during the prize-giving ceremony.
The winning team will be expected to make the oral presentation of their project at the end of the prize-giving ceremony.

12. Marks will be allotted on the following basis to short-list the best teams:
a. Scope and methodology of research work involved (based on work diary and contents
of Summary and PowerPoint print) 20 marks
b. PowerPoint slides (restitution of main ideas, organisation of sections, and visual characteristics
of graphs and illustrations) 20 marks
c. Understanding of issues posed, project approach and informative & practical value of
comments and proposals (based on quality of contents, flow of ideas and innovative features) 40 marks
d.Additional marks for the short-listed teams only (based on the oral presentation including
the use of animations and articulation of presenters with PowerPoint slide show) 20 marks

The decision of the jury shall be final and shall not be contested and/or changed.

13.Participants are allowed to interview people and to collect information for the preparation of their project but they should not in any way be helped in its planning, drafting and presentation. They will lose marks, or be disqualified, if, in the opinion of the jury, they have received undue assistance from their teachers or from outsiders.

14.The Jury will be composed of:
•Prof Swaley Kasenally, former Minister and Pro Vice Chancellor, University of Mauritius, presently Consultant – Jury Chairperson
•Dr Manoj Nardeosingh, Secretary for Cooperative Development, Ministry of Business, Enterprise and Cooperatives
•Mr Veekash Calleea, Consultant - Océan Indien Management

15.Prizes offered by Omnicane Ltd. will be as follows:

First prize:
o To the college winning the competition: The Omnicane Challenge Trophy.
o To the pupils forming part of the winning team: A total cash prize of Rs 100 000 (i.e. Rs 20 000 to each member of the team).

Second prize:
o A total cash prize of Rs 40 000 (i.e. Rs 8 000 to each pupil forming part of the team).

Special prizes: On the recommendation of the Jury.

16. All projects duly endorsed by the Rector/Principal should be delivered by hand to:

The organising committee reserves the right not to accept projects submitted after the due submission date and time.

Note:This is the third edition of the Omnicane Award. This inter-college project competition was originally known as the Lonrho Award, from 1971 to 1996, then as the Illovo Award, from 1997 to 2000, and as the Mon Trésor Award from 2004 to 2008.

Omnicane Award 2011 - Le concours inter-collèges lancé
Le thème de l’édition 2011 du Omnicane Award, organisé par Omnicane sous l’égide du ministère de l’Education et des Ressources humaines est le suivant: “The strengths and weaknesses of the Mauritian Corporate Social Responsibility approach and its relevance to the eradication of absolute poverty and social exclusion”.

Les étudiants des Forms V et VI sont invités à se regrouper par équipes de cinq pour préparer leurs projets sur le thème précité. Chaque collège pourra inscrire jusqu’à quatre équipes composées de ses étudiants.Les projets soumis comprendront en sus du texte complet, une version imprimée d’une diaporama PowerPoint, conçue en vue de soutenir une présentation orale de 15 minutes sur le thème du concours ainsi qu’un résumé des observations et de propositions qui y sont contenues. Ces éléments devront également être soumis sur CD-Rom. Les textes ainsi que les présentations devront être impérativement en anglais.

Les projets, dûment endossés par le recteur ou le manager du collège, devront parvenir au Head Office, Omnicane Ltd, 7th Floor, Anglo-Mauritius House, Port-Louis. OMNICANE AWARD 2010

The prize-giving ceremony of the 2010 edition of the Omnicane Award was held at Clos Saint-Louis, Domaine Les Pailles on Thursday 30 September 2010. The Rt. Honourable Sir Anerood Jugnauth, G.C.S.K., K.C.M.G., Q.C, President of the Republic of Mauritius, graced the function and in the presence of Honorable Dr Vasant Kumar Bunwaree, Minister of Education and Human Resources, presented the trophy to the members of the winning team from Royal College Curepipe and composed of Neeraj Servansingh (Captain), Irfaan Boodhoo, Aavinash Sewraz and Nawful Khodabocus. They each received a cash prize of Rs 20,000 and a souvenir shield. The theme of the competition was “Maurice Ile Durable – What are the major challenges facing this vision and what strategies are needed to ensure its successful implementation?”

The members of the jury were Mr. Jean Pierre Hardy, Member of the Maurice Ile Durable Fund Committee (Chairperson), Dr Khalil Elahee, Lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Mauritius and Dr Prakash Deenapanray, Consultant.

The second prize went to the team of the Loreto Convent of Quatre-Bornes made up of Amy Sam Wai Pang (Captain), Anne-Lise Calou, Estelle Li Chuen Cheong, Laëticia Dimba and Valérie Won Sun Thiong. They received each a cash prize of Rs 8,000 and a souvenir trophy was handed to the team.

Taking into account the high level shown by various other teams, three special prizes were also awarded as follows:
