Royal College Curepipe wins the 2018 Omnicane Award

Royal College Curepipe is the winner of the 2018 Omnicane Award. The results were made official during a ceremony held at Holiday Inn Mauritius Mon Trésor, Plaine Magnien, this Monday 27 August 2018.

His Excellency Mr. Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory, GOSK, Acting President, Republic of Mauritius, The Right Honorable Sir Anerood Jugnauth, GCSK, KCMG, QC, Minister Mentor, Minister of Defense, Minister for Rodrigues, Mr. Didier Maigrot, Chairperson of Omnicane, and Mr. Jacques M. d’Unienville, GOSK, Chief Executive Officer of Omnicane, presented the souvenir shields to the members of the winning team from Royal College Curepipe: Lavnish Naggea (Team Leader), Kenny Qiu Fen, Kyle Ah Von, Kavi Ramdass and Ashish Unrodee. His Excellency Mr. Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory, GOSK, Acting President, Republic of Mauritius, presented the Omnicane Award challenge trophy to Mrs Reena Nayekoo-Rajjoo, Economics teacher at the Royal College Curepipe.

Each member of the winning also received a cash prize of Rs 20 000.

The theme of the competition was: “Enn sel lepep, enn sel nation – After 50 years of Independence, to what extent is this a reality and what should be done to further consolidate nationhood and our sense of being truly Mauritian?”.

The jury was composed of:

  • Mrs. Vidula Nababsing, Social Researcher, Former Associate Professor in Sociology, University of Mauritius, Former member of the Legislative Assembly (1976- 1981) – Jury Chairperson;
  • Mrs. Christina Chan-Meetoo, Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication, Head of Mediacom Studio, University of Mauritius;
  • George Lewis Easton, Former Archivist (1971-1989), Education Officer/Educator (1989-2010), Author, Historian and Cultural Columnist.

The Loreto College Quatre Bornes team, composed of Haadia Bahemia (Team Leader), Palavee Purmanan, Mouneera Murtuza, Inayah Rohimun and Yukino Chang-Leng, are the runners-up of the competition.

They each received a cash prize of Rs 8 000 and a souvenir shield was handed to each member of the team.

Considering the high level shown by various other teams, four special prizes were also awarded as follows:

  • The Hindu Girls College team composed of Shivakarni Gooneadry (Team Leader), Poojeshwaree Ajgaybee, Somesha Dinnarain, Sheena Doorbeejah and Dhanishta Jugessur;
  • The Mahatma Gandhi Institute Secondary School team composed of Mary Layne Lim Ah Tock (Team Leader), Sheik Muhammad Azhar Goolfee, Bibi Nabiilah Golamallee, Vanshika Jugun and Nisita Lachoo;
  • The Royal College Curepipe Team composed of Eeswara Rao Mulliah (Team Leader), Vidyesh Gowry, Rajveer Balgobin, Hansraj Kora and Muhammad Venciah Soodeen; and
  • The Royal College Port Louis Team composed of Fawwaaz Rusmaully (Team Leader), Ani-Keith Teeluckdharry, Djameel Jowaheer, Aabid Shamtaully and Anas Mamode Cassim.

Every member of these four teams received a souvenir shield.

The Loreto College Quatre Bornes team, composed of Haadia Bahemia (Team Leader), Palavee Purmanan, Mouneera Murtuza, Inayah Rohimun and Yukino Chang-Leng, are the runners-up of the competition received their prize from The Right Honorable Sir Anerood Jugnauth, Minister Mentor, Minister of Defense, Minister for Rodrigues and Mr Nelson Mirthil, Chief Finance Officer of Omnicane.

Loreto Quatres Bornes

The Hindu Girls College team composed of Shivakarni Gooneadry (Team Leader), Poojeshwaree Ajgaybee, Somesha Dinnarain, Sheena Doorbeejah and Dhanishta Jugessur receive their specia prize from Mr Eddie Ah Cham, Company Secretary of Omnicane and Hon. Thierry Henry.

Hindu Girls

The Mahatma Gandhi Institute Secondary School team composed of Mary Layne Lim Ah Tock (Team Leader), Sheik Muhammad Azhar Goolfee, Bibi Nabiilah Golamallee, Vanshika Jugun and Nisita Lachoo received their special prize from Dr the Hon. Zouberr Joomaye and Mr Hahmid Seelarbokus, Group Human Resources Manager of Omnicane.

MGI

The Royal College Curepipe Team composed of Eeswara Rao Mulliah (Team Leader), Vidyesh Gowry, Rajveer Balgobin, Hansraj Kora and Muhammad Venciah Soodeen, receive their special prize from Hon. Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram, Deputy Speaker and Mr Preetam Boodhun, Board Director of Omnicane.

The Royal College Curepipe

The Royal College Port Louis Team composed of Fawwaaz Rusmaully (Team Leader), Ani-Keith Teeluckdharry, Djameel Jowaheer, Aabid Shamtaully and Anas Mamode received their special prize from from Hon. Maneesh Gobin, Attorney General, and Minister of Justice, Human Rights and Institutional Reforms and Mrs Valentine Lagesse, Board Director of Omnicane.
