Procurement

We follow a robust procurement procedure, prioritising local providers (Made in Moris) and sustainable practices. Omnicane focuses on building strong relationships with suppliers, conducting assessments in line with ISO standards, and promoting innovation. In 2022, 41% of total procurement expenditure was spent on local suppliers. We aim to further enhance our supplier diversity programme and implement an efficient inventory management system to reduce waste and optimise operations.

We Value Sustainability

In line with Omnicane’s vision, sustainability is an integral part of its DNA and long-term business strategy. This is crucial for the Company’s future, as well as for the future of our stakeholders and the planet at large. Omnicane was one of the first in the local sugarcane industry to embrace the sector’s reform and successfully implement the integrated industrial ecosystem at La Baraque cluster based on the circular economy approach, hence contributing to its resilience.

Retail & Brands

Our Retail & Brands Business Unit plays a vital role in Omnicane’s diversified portfolio. It encompasses the production and marketing of a wide range of sugar products under the brand "Dina by Omnicane" including white and raw cane sugar, Demerara sugar, and specialty sugars like Low GI and Antioxidant sugars. Additionally, this unit manufactures multi-purpose sanitisers under the "Dina Care" brand, made from bioethanol produced from sugarcane molasses.

Properties & Leisure

Our Properties and Leisure Division showcases a portfolio of assets in the regions of Mon Trésor and Britannia. From residential land to business parks mainly developed in the southern part of the island, we offer innovative and quality spaces for a vibrant lifestyle.

Logistics

Our logistics and haulage operations play a strategic role in supporting the group's diversified business activities while contributing to the nation's economic growth. With a fleet of over 30 lorries equipped with GPS technology and a unique system of tandem trailers to optimise trips to and from the port, we efficiently transport sugarcane, coal, refined sugar, cement and other products. With a focus on seamless, efficient operations and strategic management, we optimise our transportation, container management, and import/export processes.

Energy

Powering a sustainable future, our energy division leads the change in renewable energy production. Our advanced thermal power plants in Mauritius contribute to 26% of the country’s annual electricity needs and our hydroelectric plant (Omnihydro) in Rwanda produces 2.5% on the Rwandan grid demand. Embracing innovation and sustainability, we aim to replace coal with biomass within our thermal powerplants, solidifying our commitment to a greener tomorrow. We are also exploring alternative fossil-free energy sources like solar, biogas, hydro, and wind power.

Bioethanol

Our distillery has an annual production capacity of 24 million litres of bioethanol using sugarcane molasses. Our bioethanol is used in a range of applications namely, pharmaceuticals, beverages, cosmetics, power production and other various industries worldwide. We also maximise the valorisation of the by-products; CO2 from the fermentation process, is converted into beverage-grade carbon dioxide and the vinasse is transformed into bio-liquid fertilisers.

Refinery

Our refinery plays a crucial role in our sugarcane-related activities. With state-of-the-art technology, we transform raw sugar crystals into the purest, finest quality white sugar, adhering to rigorous quality control standards. Our refinery has received numerous international accreditations, namely the Bonsucro and BRCGS certifications. Our refined white sugar is exported to Europe, East Africa and the UK.

Milling

Omnicane's milling operations are at the heart of its cane cluster, where sugarcane is transformed into high-quality sugars, along with valuable by-products. With a commitment to sustainable practices and cutting-edge technology, our milling facilities ensure efficient and responsible production, contributing to a thriving and integrated sugarcane industry.

Agri

Agriculture is deeply rooted in our DNA. Our 2,250 hectares of sugarcane fields are one of the pillars of our circular economy model. As pioneers in the sugarcane industry, we have developed good agricultural practices over centuries, embracing sustainable approaches, delivering high-quality sugar while respecting the environment. We have developed expertise in field planning, land preparation and sustainable planting techniques. We follow recommendations of the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute (MSIRI) with regards to the selection of the best cane varieties.
